Brief
SUDx began as an internal toxicology analytics dashboard for the largest outpatient opioid use disorder clinic in Maryland, MATClinics.
The opportunity was to transform it into a scalable SaaS clinical intelligence platform serving outside behavioral health, pain management, and addiction treatment providers across multiple states.

Toxicology data was powerful but clinically disconnected, rich in analytics, yet misaligned with real-time care delivery.
Design Research
We conducted foundational and evaluative design research with addiction medicine physicians, therapists, and clinicians to understand how toxicology data, clinical documentation, and compliance requirements intersect with real-world treatment workflows. Through contextual inquiry, in-depth stakeholder interviews, and workflow analysis, we identified the key points of friction between laboratory reporting, insurance medical necessity standards, and clinical decision-making. Those insights informed the design of diagnostic dashboards and reporting tools, which we refined through usability testing and provider feedback.
Platform Design
We redesigned the system into a modular clinical intelligence platform that translates complex toxicology analytics, CMS Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs), and patient trend data into clear, actionable visual signals. Instead of static lab reports and fragmented dashboards, providers interact with OUD Stability Scores, substance-use heat maps, and medication metabolism insights through a clean, decision-support interface designed to reduce cognitive load and increase clinical clarity.
Compliance & AI Integration
Compliance was embedded directly into the experience through a CMS-aligned traffic-light system visualizing testing cadence and regulatory exposure in real time. We introduced the Toxicology Co-Pilot, an AI-assisted documentation tool, that streamlines EHR updates, reduces provider burden, and integrates contextual insight into workflow. Within 18 months, the platform expanded to 100+ providers and scaled to over 10,000 toxicology tests per month, positioning SUDx as a licensable SaaS solution for multi-state labs.
Systems Transformation
We began by mapping the full addiction treatment lifecycle, from intake and testing cadence to documentation, billing exposure, and audit risk. Through provider focus groups and usability research, we identified systemic friction points where compliance, care, and operational strain intersected.
The redesign focused on transforming toxicology from retrospective reporting into proactive clinical infrastructure. By aligning data science, regulatory requirements, and human-centered workflow design, we created a platform that supports better decision-making in one of healthcare’s most complex and regulated domains.
Beyond a visual refresh, this project elevated toxicology into intelligent healthcare infrastructure.
