Case Study
Glucemia. Bilingual diabetes care, delivered to your door.
Details
Diabetes doesn't discriminate, but access to diagnosis and culturally competent care does: Glucemia was built to reach the nearly half of U.S. Latinos living with the disease who don't yet know it.
At-Home HbA1c Testing Kit
A Spanish-language home blood collection kit that measures hemoglobin A1c levels over the previous 90 days. The kit includes step-by-step instructions, sterile collection tools, app download guidance, and prepaid return shipping. Results are reviewed by an independent physician and delivered directly to the user's mobile dashboard within 5–10 business days, accompanied by educational content and a prompt to enroll in a care subscription. The packaging was designed as a minimalist, embossed box — branded "El Kit" — intended to feel like a consumer wellness product rather than a clinical diagnostic.
Bilingual Mobile Dashboard
A neumorphic mobile interface built in Figma for iOS and Android, designed to surface lab results, glucose trends, weight, blood pressure, calorie intake, and carbohydrate tracking in a single view. The dashboard supports manual input and is architected for future integration with continuous glucose monitors. The visual language — soft shadows, rounded cards, warm red accents — was chosen to feel approachable and reduce the clinical anxiety that often accompanies diabetes management, particularly for first-generation users navigating the U.S. healthcare system.
Telehealth & Appointment Scheduling
A complete scheduling and consultation flow connecting users with Spanish-speaking endocrinologists via video, voice, and chat. The system surfaces doctor profiles with ratings and specialties, allows booking by date and time, and integrates prescription downloads and shared lab files. The Telehealth screens were designed to feel warm and personal, a direct counter to the cold, transactional telemedicine experiences that can alienate patients already facing language and cultural barriers in the healthcare system.
Insulin & Donation Marketplace
A web-based marketplace concept for purchasing diabetes medications and supplies, with a parallel donation channel. The idea emerged from the founder's experience trying to donate unused insulin after a family member's care changed, a surprisingly difficult process that highlighted how much usable medication goes to waste. The marketplace was envisioned as both a commerce channel and a community resource, connecting surplus supply with underserved patients.
Wearable CGM Integration & Alarm System
A future-state concept for Apple Watch that extends Glucemia's monitoring into real-time continuous glucose tracking. The watch interface includes goal setting, activity metrics, and a tiered alarm system. Visual alerts escalate from neutral to red as glucose readings move further from safe ranges, with emergency and "I'm okay" response buttons. Designed as a safety net for users managing insulin, the alarm concept addresses the life-threatening risks of hypoglycemic episodes that can occur during sleep or daily activity.
Details
Glucemia started as a pitch competition entry, but it was really an argument: that culturally competent design is the product.
Body
From Spanish-first testing kit to the warm, neumorphic dashboard and the bilingual telehealth flow, every decision was made to meet users where they are. The concept validates a $4.7 billion national opportunity, but the more important outcome was a blueprint for how direct-to-consumer health services can earn trust with communities the system has historically overlooked.
